Coach Alan Weddell, a true son of Brazosport, was born and raised here in BISD. Alan was a standout athlete at Brazosport High School, mentored by legendary coaches Harden Cooper and L.Z. Bryan. His talent on the field, combined with his academic excellence, led him to the University of Texas, where he played under the esteemed Coach Darrell Royal and contributed to the team’s 1970 National Championship victory.
During his college summers, Alan discovered his passion for coaching by working with high school athletes in BISD. After earning a degree in engineering, he shifted gears to teach and coach at Angleton High School. He later moved to Victoria High School, leading the Stingarees to two district championships and earning multiple Coach of the Year honors.
Alan’s coaching journey continued at La Marque High School, where he built a powerhouse program that won three consecutive state titles with 5 straight trips to the State Final game. His accolades include being named District Coach of the Year six times and receiving the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Coach honor in 1997.
Transitioning to college football at the request of Aggie Head Coach R.C. Slocum, Alan served as the linebacker coach at Texas A&M, contributing to the success of the “Wrecking Crew” defense with the likes of players such as Dat Nguyen and Jared Morris. Weddell coached four bowl teams including the 1998 Big 12 Championship team. He later joined Coach Art Briles’ staff at the University of Houston to coach linebackers before returning to his roots in Brazosport ISD.
In 2018 Alan Weddell was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor. After serving as BISD’s Athletic Director, Weddell boomeranged back to inspire young coaches and athletes, leaving a legacy of dedication and mentorship.
