UIL A+ Academics
UIL A+ Academics
UIL A+ Academics is a program for students in grades 2-8 that includes 20 different events that span the curriculum and are designed to complement and expand upon what students are learning in the classroom. Campuses will sponsor teams and events that the students can choose from and then compete against other students in a one day district meet usually held in February or March. Look for more information from your campus.

Science Olympiad
Science Olympiad
Science Olympiad is one of the premier science competitions in the nation, providing rigorous, standards-based challenges to nearly 8,000 teams in all 50 states. Science Olympiad hosts 450 tournaments annually and offer professional development workshops that showcase innovative science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Students in grades 7-12 may participate.

Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of team events, which students prepare for during the year. These challenging and motivational events are well balanced between the various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics and technology. There is also a balance between events requiring knowledge of science concepts, process skills and science applications.

Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets, consisting of a series of 23 team events in each division (Division C is high school). Each year, a portion of the events are rotated to reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. By combining events from all disciplines, Science Olympiad encourages a wide cross-section of students to get involved. Emphasis is placed on active, hands-on group participation. Through Science Olympiad, students, teachers, parents, principals and business leaders bond together and work toward a shared goal.

Science Fair
Science Fair
The Brazoria County Science Fair is open to all students grades PreK-8th grade who would like to complete a science project. Project types range from observation, models or experiments in one of three sciences: life, earth or physical. Topics are selected by students based on their personal interests. Students can complete projects with up to two additional team members. The countywide science fair is held annually held in February. Additional information will be sent home by the campuses and can be found online at www.bcfa.org

You Be The Chemist
You Be the Chemist
The Challenge  is an academic competition for students in grades 5-8, where the excitement and value of chemistry takes center stage! By middle school, most U.S. students have not studied chemistry as its own subject. Participating in a Challenge offers a critical exposure to this content.
Students compete individually by answering multiple choice questions in a bee-style competition, starting with a Local Challenge in their community. Students can advance to a State Challenge, and even ultimately to the National Challenge.

In BISD, 5-8 campuses provide study guides to all students who wish to participate. Some 5-8 campuses sponsor You Be The Chemist clubs after school weekly. Clubs meet September-February/March. Qualifier exams for You Be The Chemist competition is administered on campus in February. A local challenge, hosted by Dow Chemical Texas Operations is held in March for the top 44 area students to compete.
