Brazosport ISD hosted its annual ASCEND Leadership Summit on April 24, 2026, bringing students together for a day of learning, reflection, and personal growth. The event focused on helping students recognize challenges, make informed decisions, and build a strong foundation for future success.
The workshop featured a keynote address by Melissa McGee, the district’s McKinney Vento Program Specialist, who spoke on the difference between illusion and truth. She highlighted how social media often presents a curated version of reality, leading people to make unfair comparisons, and emphasized the importance of focusing on one’s own journey. McGee also addressed the “illusion of time,” encouraging students not to delay important responsibilities like college or financial aid applications. In addition, she discussed decision-making, cautioning against the mindset that harmful choices will not have consequences, and encouraged students to stop and seek guidance from a trusted adult when faced with difficult situations.
Throughout the day, students participated in sessions designed to reinforce these themes, gaining tools to navigate peer pressure, manage time effectively, and make choices aligned with their goals.
Through partnerships with community agencies, students learned about local resources that support workforce development, college and career readiness, and mental and financial wellness—equipping them with the skills to lead healthy, successful lives.
The ASCEND Leadership Summit continues to be an important part of Brazosport ISD’s commitment to preparing students for success beyond the classroom, equipping them not only with academic knowledge, but with the awareness, college and career preparation, and decision-making skills needed to thrive in an ever-changing world.
