Brazoswood High School had 3 students take and pass the unmanned pilots exam, also known as the FAA 107 exam. Talon Sumerford, John Redden, Charlie Simiskey, led by their instructor Mr. Brad Whitehead, recently earned their Remote Pilot Certificate from the FAA, through rigorous learning and testing.

In order to fly a drone under the FAA's Small UAS Rule (Part 107), first the applicant must obtain a Remote Pilot Certificate from the FAA. This certificate demonstrates that these students  understand the regulations, operating requirements, and procedures for safely flying drones.
To become a pilot, the applicant must:

  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English
  • Be in a physical and mental condition to safely fly a drone
  • Pass the initial aeronautical knowledge exam that includes test topic areas such as -
    • Applicable regulations relating to small unmanned aircraft system rating privileges, limitations, and flight operation
    • Airspace classification and operating requirements, and flight restrictions affecting small unmanned aircraft operation
    • Aviation weather sources and effects of weather on small unmanned aircraft performance
    • Small unmanned aircraft loading and performance Emergency procedures
    • Crew resource management
    • Radio communication procedures
    • Determining the performance of small unmanned aircraft Physiological effects of drugs and alcohol
    • Aeronautical decision-making and judgment
    • Airport operations
    • Maintenance and preflight inspection procedures

With the 107 certificate, these three Brazoswood students can legally fly drones commercially, but to maintain their license, they must pass a recurrent knowledge test every two years.

Congratulations to Talon Sumerford, John Redden, Charlie Simiskey and their instructor Mr. Brad Whitehead for their hard work and dedication.
