Brazosport ISD’s Book Bus wrapped up another successful summer, bringing books directly to children throughout the community and helping keep young readers connected to reading while school was out.

This summer, the BISD Book Bus made stops at 23 locations across the district, including apartment complexes, childcare centers, churches, parks, recreation centers and other community locations. Children checked out 2,869 books during the summer. At each stop, young readers had the opportunity to step aboard the bus, choose books that interested them and return throughout the summer to find something new to read.

“The excitement children have when they visit the Book Bus is what makes this program so special,” said Rita Cundieff, BISD Deputy Superintendent of Elementary Schools. “When we make books easy to access and give children the chance to choose what they want to read, they read.”

The Book Bus helps reduce barriers to accessing books during the summer months by bringing them directly into neighborhoods and community spaces where children and families gather.

The program will continue to grow next summer, with plans to add eight additional daycare locations to the Book Bus route. The expansion will help put even more books into the hands of BISD students and provide more opportunities for children to keep reading when school is not in session.
