In a milestone weekend for Brazoswood water polo, the Lady Bucs made history by claiming the Class 6A UIL State Water Polo Championship on October 26, 2024. Their hard-fought 11-9 overtime victory against two-time defending champions Foster High School at the Josh Davis Natatorium in San Antonio marked an unforgettable achievement, showcasing the Lady Bucs’ resilience, teamwork, and dedication. Their record for the 2024 season was 28-2, with their only loss this year being to Foster, the team that they eventually played and won at the state finals.
Trailing by three goals at the end of the third period, the Lady Bucs rallied with exceptional grit, tying the game in regulation to force overtime. With the unwavering support of their coaches, teammates, and fans, the Lady Bucs surged ahead in overtime to claim the state title—a defining moment for Brazoswood and Brazosport ISD. Among the standout players, Mallory Kesler was named Most Valuable Player by the UIL, an honor recognizing her outstanding skill and impact throughout the season.
This historic win builds on Brazoswood’s water polo legacy, following the path set by the Brazoswood Buccaneer Boys Water Polo Team, who earned the first-ever UIL State Championship in 2022 with a perfect 28-0 season. The Lady Bucs themselves were pioneers that same year, finishing as the inaugural UIL State Runners-Up with an impressive 24-4 record.
Head Coach Robert Brown, recognized as the NFHS 2022-2023 UIL State Coach of the Year, praised the team’s relentless drive and determination. “This championship win is a reflection of the grit, teamwork, and commitment these players brought to the pool every day,” Brown shared. “Watching them dig deep and finish the season with this title is beyond inspiring. We couldn’t be prouder of what they’ve accomplished.”
To celebrate this remarkable achievement, Brazosport ISD invites the community to join a parade on Sunday, November 17, 2024, starting at 1 p.m., followed by a ceremony in the Brazoswood auditorium.
