Brazosport ISD is taking a proactive approach to preparing students for life after high school by changing how College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR) is planned for. Beginning with the 2026–27 school year, freshmen students entering high school will have a new graduation requirement to plan for in collaboration with their high school and parents. A measure of College, Career, and Military readiness will be a required component of a student’s graduation.
This change aligns with BISD’s mission to graduate each student to be future ready, ensuring all graduates are prepared to pursue postsecondary education, enter the workforce, or serve in the military. Historically, students could meet CCMR requirements through a variety of methods, including college prep courses, Advanced Placement exams, dual credit, or industry-based certifications. While many of these options remain, the district’s new approach emphasizes intentional, multi-year planning and achievement.
“CCMR readiness is no longer something students can check off at the last minute,” said Brian Cole, Deputy Superintendent. “By beginning this journey in ninth grade, we are creating a plan for success that is deliberate, supported, and sustainable.”
The shift also responds to changes at the state level. The Texas Education Agency will now require approval for college preparation courses to count for accountability, and certain industry-based certifications will be limited in how they contribute to CCMR. This makes early planning and multi-year pathways even more important.
Under the new approach, students can earn CCMR credit through pathways including:
- Meeting Texas Success Initiative (TSI) criteria on college entrance exams
- Earning qualifying scores on Advanced Placement (AP) exams
- Completing dual credit courses
- Earning a Tier 1 or 2 industry-based certification with program of study completion
- Earning an associate degree while in high school
- Enlisting in the U.S. Armed Forces
The approved policy also allows for a campus-based committee to review extenuating circumstances and provide alternatives if necessary.
Brazosport ISD believes that starting the CCMR journey in freshman year, rather than waiting until senior year, will strengthen preparation for college, career, and military pathways and ensure that every graduate leaves BISD future ready.
