Brazosport ISD remains committed to the safety and well-being of every student. As part of this commitment, the district will observe Fentanyl Awareness Month in October by ensuring all students in grades 6–12 receive age-appropriate education on the dangers of fentanyl use.

This initiative is part of Tucker’s Law, a state requirement passed during the Regular Session of the 88th Legislature and signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott in 2023. The law is designed to combat the rising public health crisis due to fentanyl by ensuring that students receive education about the risks associated with fentanyl, including overdose, poisoning, addiction, and to help equip students with knowledge about prevention.

To meet this requirement, BISD has developed a comprehensive plan for the 2025–2026 school year:

In addition to classroom instruction, BISD is sharing resources with families to help support ongoing conversations at home. Parents are encouraged to:

  • Talk to their teens about risks they may face in social settings.
  • Monitor social media and app usage.
  • Encourage student involvement in extracurricular and community activities.
  • Use the district’s anonymous reporting tool, Keep BISD Safe, to report concerns.
  • Watch for changes in behavior and seek help if needed through school counselors or community resources.

“As educators and as a community, we have a responsibility to keep our students informed and safe,” said Allison Jasso, BISD’s Director of Guidance & Counseling. “Through this initiative, we are equipping students with critical knowledge, while also encouraging parents to have open and honest conversations with their children about the dangers of fentanyl.”
