In an effort to inspire and empower more young ladies to consider STEM, Dow Texas Operations hosted the fifth annual Girls in STEM Day at the Dow Academic Center of Brazosport College. This year, more than 350 sixth-grade girls from Brazosport ISD participated in this event, which was designed to spark curiosity and encourage students to explore the possibilities of STEM careers.
Students from Stephen F Austin Elementary, Rasco Middle, Clute Intermediate and Freeport Intermediate attended the day's events, where they were introduced to engaging STEM activities that included hands-on opportunities and question and answer sessions with biology, physics, environmental science, chemistry, engineering and computer science experiments experts. Each workshop had experienced engineers, scientists and technologists to assist each student with fun and engaging science experiments and presentations. The girls rotated through the interactive sessions and had the opportunity to discuss STEM careers as well as the future of STEM in the workplace.
Beau Watson, BISD K-12 Science Coordinator said of the event, "Girls in STEM Day is a day we celebrate the brilliant minds who are breaking barriers and shaping the future, proving that curiosity knows no boundaries. Thank you, DOW, for organizing and sponsoring such an outstanding event that our students eagerly anticipate every year."
This highly anticipated event takes hundreds of volunteers and hours of coordinated planning. Thanks to Brazosport College for hosting this day of fun learning and to the approximately 150 Dow volunteers and other organizations that contributed.
