The Freeport Intermediate School (FIS) Jazz Band earned top honors this past weekend, being named Grand Champion at the Willowridge Jazz Festival after an outstanding performance against both middle school and high school competitors.
The band performed a challenging musical set, showcasing months of preparation and dedication. Their efforts also earned a First Division (Superior) rating, along with Outstanding Trumpet Section and Outstanding Saxophone Section honors. The group was additionally recognized as the Overall Middle School Division Winner.
In addition to the ensemble awards, several students received individual recognition. Sebastian Ruelas was honored with a Soloist Award for his exceptional performance, while Madison Cates earned the prestigious Spirit of Jazz Award. Cates was recognized for her featured trumpet solo, performing the main part of a piece in front of the ensemble.
The Grand Champion title is especially notable as Freeport Intermediate, which serves students in grades 7 and 8, competed against and outperformed multiple junior high and high school programs.
“They played a difficult set and worked incredibly hard to prepare for it,” said Band Director Dustin Hernandez. “I could not be more proud of them.”
