On Friday, September 26, 2025, Brazosport ISD student-athletes and coaches came together for the second annual LEAD event, LEAD2025, presented by 2Words Character Development and founder, Stephen Mackey.
The event brought together members of the Athletic Leadership Councils (ALCs) from Brazosport High School and Brazoswood High School, along with their head coaches, campus principals, BISD Superintendent and leadership team, and the Board of Trustees. Held on a BISD staff professional development day (meaning students attended on what would have been a student holiday) LEAD2025 highlighted the dedication of student-athletes who chose to invest in growing their leadership and character.
Participants engaged in roundtable discussions on leadership and character, continuing the important work of building a strong culture of character within BISD athletics.
“LEAD2025 gives our students and coaches the chance to take the lessons of the 2 Words Character Education Curriculum to the next level,” said Jay Zeller, BISD Director of Athletics and Activities. “Mr. Mackey’s message aligns perfectly with the culture we are working to build in our district: one voice, one standard, and a commitment to helping our young people grow as leaders of character.”
Student-athletes are nominated by their head coach to serve on the Athlete Leadership Council and must maintain exemplary character to remain part of this elite group. Each athletic program selects 2–3 athletes, with campus coordinators leading the initiative. Program Coordinators for Brazosport High School are Coach Sincere and Coach Short, while Coach Luster and Coach Trotter serve as coordinators for Brazoswood High School.
“I am proud of the commitment our student-athletes showed by choosing to spend their holiday investing in leadership,” said Danny Massey, BISD Superintendent. “LEAD2025 reflects our mission of preparing every student to be future ready, on the field, in the classroom, and in life.”
Since 2022, BISD has partnered with the 2Words program, a weekly video-based curriculum designed to equip coaches and athletes with tools to grow as leaders both on and off the field. In addition, the Athlete Leadership Council was established to unite student leaders across the district and provide them with opportunities to influence their teams, schools, and community in positive ways.
With programs like 2Words and the Athletic Leadership Council, the district continues to support students in becoming positive role models on their teams, for their campus and in the community. Lead2025 is one more step toward helping students lead with integrity both on and off the field.
