Brazosport ISD’s Melissa McGee has been named the recipient of the THN Outstanding Outreach Worker Award, recognizing her dedication to supporting students and families through the district’s ASCEND Program — Acquiring Strength, Character, Employability and Networking Skills with Determination.

McGee works to remove barriers that can make it difficult for students to stay in school and succeed. Through the ASCEND Program, she builds relationships with students and families, provides individualized support and connects them with resources and community services.

Her work has helped contribute to a significant reduction in the district’s OSP student dropout rate, which has decreased from 16.8% to 2.5%.

McGee mentors students across seven BISD campuses, providing encouragement, advocacy and support based on each student’s needs. Her work often extends beyond the school day and campus, including home visits and connections to resources such as food, clothing, transportation and school supplies.

She also works closely with community partners to help families access services and support that can remove barriers to education.

The THN Outstanding Outreach Worker Award recognizes McGee not only for the measurable results of her work, but also for the compassion and dedication she brings to the students and families she serves.

“Melissa works hard to make sure our students know they have someone in their corner,” said Brazosport ISD Superintendent Danny Massey. “She builds trust, follows through and finds ways to help students overcome barriers so they can stay connected to school and move forward.”

McGee’s recognition reflects the difference that consistent, caring support can make in a student’s life. Through her work with ASCEND, she continues to help students find the support and opportunities they need to stay in school and work toward their goals.
