In preparation for the 2020-2021 school year, BISD will also provide instruction via a virtual at home learning environment. Final decisions for course offerings and scheduling of virtual instruction will be made based on the number of students who choose virtual instruction
At Home Learning will include scheduled two-way, real-time/live instruction between teachers and students while students are not on campus in most cases. Additionally, students are expected to engage in learning activities and assignments outside of the live instructional time with their teacher(s). At the elementary level, students are expected to be actively engaged in learning for a minimum of three to four hours daily. At the secondary level, students are expected to be actively engaged in learning for a minimum of 6-7 hours daily. Students must meet these requirements to be counted present on a daily basis. Students are required to attend at least 90% of their classes to receive credit and be promoted. Virtual at home attendance will count in the same manner as on-campus attendance in satisfying this requirement.
Additionally at the secondary level, limited courses will be available in a more independent and self-paced format. For these courses, teachers will be available to provide support and help students set goals to complete their online coursework. These courses do not have a real-time/live instructional component. Successful students will be highly independent learners and able to advocate for additional support when needed. Students will be required to make daily progress on such courses to be counted as present each day. The coursework cannot be completed all at once.
Please note that students who participate in fully virtual at home learning will have limited course offerings which may result in changes to their preferred course selections as not all courses can be completed in a fully virtual environment.

At Home Learning in the 2020-2021 school year in BISD will look vastly different from virtual instruction during the 2020 Spring semester closure. Students must have access to the following:

  • Reliable broadband internet access (capable of supporting video instruction);
  • Space conducive to long periods of learning at home for each student.

In addition, the following requirements must be met before a student can be enrolled:

  • The student had passing grades at the end of the 2019-2020 school year in all subjects.
  • The student met standard during remote learning in the Spring semester of 2020.

In order to continue in virtual at home learning once enrolled, the following requirements must be met:

  • The student will participate in all required coursework and virtual at home lessons during normal school hours.
  • The student will have passing grades at the end of each grading period (failure to have passing grades will result in un-enrollment in virtual at home learning and enrollment in at school learning at their assigned school).
  • The student will participate in all tutoring sessions required by the teachers.

Changing from At Home to At School Learning or At School to At Home Learning
The selection of a learning environment is for a minimum of one nine week grading period. Changing of a learning environment will not occur in the middle of a grading period. Exceptions in the best interest of the students may be approved by campus principals subject to availability.
