The Brazosport High School W. Marcus Stephenson Field House dedication ceremony was held on Monday, February 19, 2024. In 2016, the Brazosport ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved honoring Mr. Stephenson, a Brazosport High School graduate, class of 1954, a former BISD Board Trustee, and a respected Brazosport area leader by naming the existing field house in his name. Marcus Stephenson, who passed away in 2020, attended the original naming ceremony in 2016. The new multi-sport complex, completed this school year, was dedicated in Stephenson’s honor as his wife Lila, his family, and friends were in attendance as current Brazosport High School athletes lined the room. The new facility will continue to honor and carry his name – the W. Marcus Stephenson Field House.

"This fieldhouse certainly represents our vision of Setting the Standard for Educational Excellence; we believe athletics teaches incredible life lessons to students. It teaches students how to sacrifice and be a part of something bigger than themselves. It teaches students to work hard and that to be successful you must have great determination and grit. It teaches how to overcome obstacles and deal with adversity, and failure, and that everything is not always fair in life. It teaches students how to set goals, how to be a good teammate, and so much more,” said BISD Superintendent Danny Massey.

Marcus Stephenson dedicated over 40 years of his life through volunteer service to BISD and the surrounding communities. From 1967 to 1992, Marcus served on the BISD Board of Trustees, also serving as President of the Board for many of those years. During this time, Stephenson also served on the Texas Association of School Boards, and Board of Trustees.

Mr. Stephenson dedicated a great deal of his time to numerous civic and charitable organizations throughout the county.
