A product of the Houston area, Ruben Perez found his passion for music and desire to become a choral director during his high school years at Mayde Creek High School in Katy ISD. Ruben was awarded several music scholarships to study music education at Stephen F. Austin State University. He graduated magna cum laude in 2015 and knew immediately that he wanted to pursue a master’s degree in choral conducting. During his graduate studies, Ruben worked closely with the Director of Choral Activities, Dr. Tim King, as his graduate assistant, as well as with Dr. Tod Fish, Associate Director. Through his assistantship, Ruben provided mentorships to students in undergraduate conducting and choral materials classes.

After graduating with his Master of Music he began his teaching career in Fort Bend ISD at David Crockett Middle School as the Assistant Choir Director. In his two years of teaching at the middle school level, Mr. Perez’s choirs performed successfully at UIL, as well as at district festivals. In 2019, his sixth-grade tenor-bass choir earned recognition as the best of FBISD in their division. From there, Mr. Perez had the opportunity to give back to his Katy community by serving as the Assistant Choir Director at Obra D.Tompkins High School. He brought successful choirs to UIL and collaborated with the fine arts team to produce large student performances such as masterworks and musicals. His most recent successes include earning all Superior ratings with his ensembles at UIL, coaching several students to earn placement in Texas All State Choirs, and receiving many nominations in the 2022 Tommy Tune Awards, including an Outstanding Music Director nomination in collaboration with his colleagues.

Ruben is grateful for the love and support of his college sweetheart, Elaina Perez, who works as Assistant Choir Director at Angleton High School. After earning their master’s degrees in music and getting married, they moved to Pearland, TX where they live with their rescue dog, Nala. They are so excited to belong to this wonderful, close-knit Brazoria County community! Ruben could not be happier to now call Brazoswood home.
