Early in 2018 Mrs. George saw a great need for young people. What was that great need? Within the span of a few months, Brazoria County experienced 14 attempted suicides of teens. “Brenda felt called to act, not just talk, about suicide prevention as something the schools should do,” said BISD Superintendent Danny Massey.

By mobilizing family and friends in the Brazosport area, Mrs. George established the STOP initiative and organized the first community STOP rally to educate students and their parents on the issues facing teenagers today. From that first rally in Freeport, Texas in July of 2018, Mrs. George has continued her work to reach students in school districts across Brazoria County. Last year the STOP program was held in 4 school districts and this year students in 8 school districts will hear the message “You are not alone. There is a plan and purpose for your life… Suicide is NOT the answer.”

The State Board of Education (SBOE) established the Heroes for Children award program in 1994. Since its beginning, the award has provided a means to recognize Texas residents who render selfless acts of service by offering their time, effort and support to public schools and students. The award honors volunteers who have made outstanding contributions to student learning or who have demonstrated sustained periods of involvement and support of public education. Each year, the 15-member Board recognizes one Hero from each of their districts. The Heroes for Children award recipients are honored at the September SBOE meeting. The ceremony is held in the William B. Travis State Office Building, Room 1-104, at 1701 North Congress Ave. in Austin.

Congratulations Mrs. Brenda George on receiving this prestigious honor and thank you for serving students in Brazosport ISD and the state.
