The Brazosport ISD Book Bus will deliver reading opportunities to our students this summer! The Book Bus, a mobile library, will make weekly stops at many apartment complexes, the Lake Jackson Rec Center, as well as stops at several of our BISD schools. Stops at multiple locations daily will run Tuesdays-Thursdays, June 7-July 21, giving children time to read or check out a book.
The bus contains age-appropriate books for students of all reading levels. “The goal is to reduce the “summer slide” and give students and families additional quality learning opportunities,” said Michelle Griffith, BISD Instructional Resource Coordinator and Lead Librarian. The Book Bus is truly a team effort. The project was funded by a grant from the Brazosport ISD Education Foundation and the District’s Transportation Department donated a bus, which has been totally refurbished by our very own BISD high school career and technical students.
There are many components to the Book Bus that involve not only teachers, but parents, district personnel, and community members at large. “We have a very supportive community that values education,” says Superintendent Danny Massey. “A key component of our literacy effort includes engaging our teaching community, families, community members, and businesses to get involved. It’s going to take the whole village to create these readers as leaders!”
