75 Years of Educational Excellence...
On Saturday 26 August, 1944, citizens in Freeport ISD, the Velasco ISD and Common School District No. 14 went to the polls to decide whether to consolidate the three districts. The businesses, industries and school boards of the area were for it. In the Freeport, 836 people voted for the consolidation, 7 against it. In Velasco, Camp Chemical, the DMC Trailer Park and the Gulf Park-Slaughter Road area, 331 people voted for it, 24 against it. In Common School District No. 14 (Clute and Lake Jackson), 401 people voted for it, 20 against it. In total, 1,584 people voted for the consolidation, only 51 against it—a landslide. Five days later, on August 31, the Brazoria County Board of School Trustees declared the school districts consolidated and named the new district the Brazosport Independent School District.
And so BISD began 75 years ago, building on the foundation of a growing community, made up of several small towns. Today, the Brazosport Independent School District area continues to flourish with the support of 8 municipalities - Clute, Freeport, Jones Creek, Lake Jackson, Oyster Creek, Quintana, Richwood and Surfside Beach.
