Two outstanding Brazoswood writers had the amazing opportunity to join over 4000 journalism students at the National High School Journalism Convention in Boston, Massachusetts November 2-5, 2023. Competing against over 1400 other high school students from across the country, Senior Ava Garza and Sophomore Harper Nichols participated in the categories of Feature Writing and News Writing respectively and came back from the competition with Honorable Mention honors.
“We really didn’t know what to expect going into the national contest. The girls had only competed using live press conference style interviews once before and they were competing against a lot of great talent,” advisor Lela Siegel said. “We were ecstatic with the results and I could not be more proud of them.”
The convention had numerous topics for the students including a writer’s workshop, digital photography workshop, the art of interviewing, secrets of storytelling, photojournalism and many more.
