On Wednesday January 29th, Freeport Intermediate students showcased their campus aquaponic garden during a segment on WE Day Connect. The live webcast is seen by over 80 countries and highlights ways students in classrooms are doing good in the world around them. The WE Connect platform aims to inspire classrooms around the globe to join the conversation “on doing good.”
Freeport Intermediate students were invited to share about their aquaponic garden project started last year. An aquaponic is a food production system. It combines aquaculture (raising animals such as fish, prawns or snails in water) with hydroponics (growing plants in water instead of soil). The goal of aquaponic is to create a fully self-sustaining system of food.
WE Day Connect features motivational stories of young people, school groups and educators rallying around the causes they care about. The project works to unite schools globally to make an impact together through acts of service.
Ian White, FIS Principal added, “ Thanks to Dow and We Are Innovators our campus and students had the opportunity to take a dream of a sustainable living and make it happen. In the last year, Freeport Intermediate was able to build and develop a fully functioning aquaponics garden on our campus; and WE Day Connect gave us the honor of sharing that work worldwide! With the support of WE and Dow, our students were able to witness and live the experience of being global change agents."
