Brazosport ISD has a total of 37 outstanding counselors across the district and annually we have the opportunity to give special recognition to an elementary and a secondary counselor as Counselors of the Year. School counselors assist students at all levels. As vital members of the school leadership team, school counselors create a school culture of success for all. Mrs. Cardona and Mrs. Mathews demonstrate attributes and qualities of supporting students in the areas of career, personal/social and academic development, and have the highest levels of professional and personal ethical standards.

Counselors of the Year 2024

Kelsey Cardona

Kelsey Cardona has been in education for eleven years. She began as a junior high math teacher and then was an elementary physical education teacher prior to becoming a Professional School Counselor three years ago. Her favorite thing about being an elementary school counselor is being able to teach ALL students from Pre-K through fourth grade. She loves being able to see the growth her students achieve in their problem solving, communication, and coping skills each year. When asked what she wishes all her students knew, Mrs. Cardona shared, “I hope all of my students know they are capable of great things and that they are in control of their destiny. The bad days will not last forever and savor the good ones!”

LeeAnn Mathews

LeeAnn Mathews has been in education for 27 years. Twenty-six of those years have been in Brazosport ISD. She was a teacher prior to becoming a Professional School Counselor seven years ago. Her favorite thing about being a school counselor is the interaction she has with her students and helping them decide what they would like to do in their future. When asked what she wishes all her students knew, Mrs. Mathews shared, “Everyone fails at something. Failure doesn’t have to be an ending; and that your response to failure is so important. You can either let it defeat you or use it as a learning experience to keep going, which will also help define your character.”
